IMS

IMS migrations are without a doubt among the most challenging database migration projects that can be undertaken.

MigrationWare has invested a great deal of effort in developing automation tools that successfully address the requirements for IMS to SQL migrations.

When considering a Migration from IMS to a relational SQL DBMS, the use of automation tools is key. Our tools will ensure that as much of the inventory analysis, source and data conversion, regression testing, and results analysis is as automated as possible.

The technology will find every DLI construct that needs to be changed. Typically, there will be thousands of DLI calls throughout the inventory and it is important that all are identified at the beginning of the project. Each construct will mean code changes - therefore, the same technology will be applied to identify precisely what code will be changed and, importantly, the impact those changes will have on any other items within the code.

Analysing to this degree of accuracy using manual methods is a lengthy process that is prone to human error. Technology will turn this exercise into days and not weeks with audit trails that prove the accuracy of the analysis.

Our tools replace all references to IMS within COBOL code, with equivalent embedded SQL statements. All references to fields which are no longer defined in the relational databases (e.g. group levels and redefines) are automatically replaced with alternative statements which provide for equivalence.

MigrationWare has developed regression testing technology targeted at supporting the needs of IMS migrations. These tools greatly reduce the manual effort involved in these projects. Please refer to Regression Manager.
