LIFT & SHIFT MIGRATIONS
IBM mainframes run the majority of the world’s business applications because they are proven environments offering high availability, top class security, excellent workload management, large volume data processing and high performance transaction processing.
However, three technology advances have recently come together that make it both attractive and possible to “Lift and Shift” mainframe applications to the Windows and .NET platform.
- Multi-microprocessor architecture provides higher processing power at much lower cost;
- Availability of alternative low cost, industrial-strength software operating systems;
- Extension to these platforms of support for mainframe technlogies allow for these to operate unchanged on these platforms.
“Lift and Shift” offers a migration approach that dramatically lowers hardware and software costs by enabling low risk migration from certain mainframe applications to a modern, open and extensible platform.
Micro Focus’ Enterprise Server, a transactional environment for COBOL applications, provides IBM compatible support for COBOL/CICS applications on Windows to enable such applications to be migrated with zero or minimum change.
Organizations can exploit the COBOL/CICS capabilities of Enterprise Server to minimize risks during migration while delivering the agility offered by moving to an open platform, free of restrictive and expensive mainframe infrastructure, and where the application can be extended freely using contemporary technologies.
Where COBOL accesses ADABAS, Migrationware’s Native ADABAS pre-compiler for COBOL is critical to ensuring that the original source code can be moved without change. This makes it possible for the ADASQL statements embedded in the COBOL code to remain intact.
