There is an increasing requirement for IT systems to provide efficient business-to-business capabilities through the use of open, SQL based applications. This is often in parallel with a move onto a cheaper platform, encompassing the use of data warehousing and/or Customer Relationship Management tools (CRM). The use of certain mainframe languages and databases may introduce obstacles in terms of portability and database integration, and thus limit the modernisation of business applications.

Skills in some Mainframe database management systems are becoming scarce while relational database expertise is more commonplace. As this legacy data is in many cases a significant asset to the business, converting to the typically strategic open SQL based environment will future proof the business in terms of data skills allowing for faster and more flexible access to critical business information.
